BMW Vision Neue Klasse

2026-10-19 18:50:01

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is an all-electric concept car that made its global premiere by the BMW Group in Munich on 2 September 2023. "Neue Klasse" translates to "New Class" in German, a name paying homage to the 1960s "New Class" model line that rescued BMW from crisis and established the foundation for its sporty luxury identity. Built on the all-new NCAR (New Cluster Architecture) platform engineered exclusively for fully electric vehicles, the Vision Neue Klasse showcases BMW's core innovations in electrification, digitalisation, and circularity, serving as a preview of the next-generation all-electric BMW 3 Series.

Design Language

On the exterior, the Vision Neue Klasse digitally reinterprets classic BMW design cues. The signature front kidney grille has been reimagined as an illuminated interactive surface with integrated 3D animated lighting elements. The headlights on either side take the form of dual light strips, blending seamlessly into the grille. Distinct character lines on the bonnet accentuate its muscular stance. Along the flanks, the iconic Hofmeister kink is retained on the C-pillar, complemented by a transparent finish along the lower window line. A relatively flat roofline yields proportions reminiscent of a traditional three-box sedan. The tail lamp styling mirrors the front grille. By significantly streamlining the mix of materials used for the body panels, the proportion of recyclable raw materials has been increased in line with BMW's circular sustainability philosophy.

Inside, the cabin embraces a minimalist design approach. The conventional instrument cluster is superseded by the "BMW Panoramic Vision" — a system that projects driving data, navigation, and infotainment across the full width of the windscreen, clearly visible to all occupants. Drivers can transfer content from the central display onto the Panoramic Vision projection with simple gestures or swipe controls. A 3D Head-Up Display is also positioned directly above the Panoramic Vision. The centre console features a uniquely shaped floating touchscreen paired with a squarish flat-top-and-bottom steering wheel, alongside a crystal-finish gear selector. Slim, fabric-trimmed seats are mounted directly to the floor via dedicated brackets to maximise rear legroom. The light-toned dashboard integrates seamlessly with the matrix-backlit display. The car is configured with a four-seater layout.

Powertrain Performance

The Vision Neue Klasse is powered by BMW's sixth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive technology. It runs on an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture and features newly developed cylindrical battery cells with an energy density over 20% higher than current units. Thanks to the 800V architecture and new cells, overall vehicle efficiency is improved by 25%, while driving range gets a 30% boost. Production variants equipped with long-range battery packs are projected to deliver a range of up to approximately 700 km. Charging speeds have also been increased by 30% — capable of replenishing roughly 300 km of range in just 10 minutes.

Chassis and Handling

The Vision Neue Klasse sits on BMW's all-new NCAR dedicated EV architecture. Unlike the current CLAR and FAAR platforms, NCAR is purpose-built from the ground up for pure electric propulsion. BMW asserts that "Sheer Driving Pleasure" will serve as the fourth core pillar for the Neue Klasse model family. To evaluate the platform's dynamic capabilities, BMW engineered the Vision Driving Experience prototype, which delivered up to 18,000 Nm of wheel torque across a 12-month test programme spanning 75,000 cumulative hours. Production Neue Klasse models will come standard with the "Heart of Joy" driving control system to ensure pinpoint driving dynamics.

Cabin and Equipment

The cabin runs on the next-generation BMW iDrive operating system. Built on a highly integrated software architecture, it merges driving dynamics and infotainment data with telematics from the vehicle's electrical/electronic system and the BMW Cloud. A wireless smartphone charging pad is provided on the centre console. In addition, the window glass incorporates electronic ink (E Ink) technology, allowing instant, one-touch tint adjustment.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The Vision Neue Klasse will feature next-generation advanced driver assistance systems. BMW's China R&D team has been actively undertaking local development for Level 2+ and Level 3 automated driving capabilities. The vehicle is underpinned by an all-new electronic and electrical architecture, providing the hardware foundation for advanced automated driving.

Market Performance and Reception

The Vision Neue Klasse concept made its world premiere ahead of the 2023 Munich Motor Show and went on to make its Chinese debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The first production model spawned from this concept is slated to be unveiled in 2025. The initial rollout will comprise a mid-size four-door sedan and a mid-size SUV. Local production of the Neue Klasse in China will commence at the BMW Brilliance Shenyang plant in 2026. By 2027, a total of six new models built on this architecture will be introduced. The debut of the Vision Neue Klasse not only underlines BMW's technological strengths in electrification, digitalisation, and circularity, but also marks the dawn of an entirely new era for the century-old carmaker.
